How do I sort on sub-totals in excel?

I have a spreadsheet with about 38k rows. There is a column with product names that I want to subtotal on count then sort. I want the entries that have the most counts up at the top of my report. I know how to subtotal and I know how to sort but how do you do both. I tried to get the value of the subtotal to appear in a separate column but can't see how to do that (since if I could then in theory I could then sort on that column). Thoughts and advice are welcome.
